Love the chow jew noodles here! Cash only.
They have wonderful fish cakes and great pho. I slways get the same pho because it’s the tastiest anywhere. I get the shrimp ho fun. It’s made with shrimp and seafood broth. At most other places I’ve tried it’s made with chicken broth - not the same taste at all. My spouse usually gets the beef stew ho fun. Hi fun are wide rice noodles and they are delicious.
I ordered #21 "chow jew ho fun" as it is pretty popular here. Slices of BBQ pork, ground pork, shrimp, pork ball, fish ball, and I substituted fish cake instead of kidneys. The broth was light and the noodles were of good soft but with a little al dente chew. The BBQ pork, shrimp and fish cake were all that stood out in this otherwise modest dish. It don't blow me away, and I think the broth was what held it back.
The food is always well prepared and yummy, employees hands out good service. I loved how neat it is and ambience. Keep up the good work.
The best combination won ton soup & chow me in in the entire Bay Area. My family has been coming here for over 20 years! I came here as a little kid & now I take my kids too.💜
I remember coming here as a kid. My go to dish is the chow jew ho fun, soup on the side. I like to top the noodles with hot oil, hoisin and pickled peppers. That soup on the side just cleanses everything. The only thing I don't like is I always run into someone I know. Not a bad thing but damnit let me eat my noodles.
Love the raw beef noodle. Sautéed pig kidneys are delicious too
Best homemade noodles! #21 on the menu.
Never disappointed me. A bit pricey but worth it. High quality incrediant and pretty healthy.
The service is good but the food is so so. My friend's order (soup noodle) didn't cook well and they had no problem to give him a new one.My order is Beef satay soup noodle and New Chung Kee (Milpitas) is better and cheaper.Beef satay soup noodle is only available at "Chao Zhou (潮州)+ Vietnamese" style restaurants so I use it to judge the food quality. To be fair, the fish cake is OK. My friends orders look OK but nothing impressive.BTW it's hard to find parking at Oakland Chinatown so if you live far away then don't bother.
The fried noodles are delicious. The sauce was not overly salty and it had just the right amount of beef and vegetables. My only gripe tho was the plate was too small. I could not mix it properly and had some spill on the table.
Still the best noodle soup, just $9.50 now
Best as far as I am concerned, I enjoy the Beef Satay soup and the Seafood Ho Fun soup is also very good. I have been coming here for over 30 years without disappointment. The prices have gone up but it is guaranteed satisfaction so it is an easy choice to make.
Old school, traditional Chinatown hole-in-the-wall that's one of my sources for comfort food.
This is a good place as who want the noise and lousy from others. Sharing table w/O asking customer is normal in this restaurant. I don't fit with this life style. But the food taste good. ..um
One of the best classic Cantonese restaurants in the States. The noodles are some of the finest in California! In my opinion, one can just blindly order from it's menu and have a great meal. The place is nowhere near upscale. The service is quite basic, but gets one's needs addressed. The tea is bland and cheap. Dinnerware is equally cheap and unflattering. But who cares, the food is some of the finest.Don't miss this place if you want fine classic Cantonese noodles.
This restaurant has been there many years & never turn customers down. New guests should try their fish cakes 👍👍👍
Hole in the wall place with tungkee type noodle soup. Very flavorful soup base with plenty of meats and seafood for a great price. They speak Viet and Canto.
I was a little confused when I first arrived but we were seated quickly! The service was quick and the food came out just as quick! Food was good!
This is a favorite noodle place for me. Ask for the Chow Jew Ho Fun!
This place is the best restaurant in the bay area..i eat here almost everyday, its like my kitchen ...i highly recommend this place to all my friends and families....the signature dish #21 is highly recommended....you can also add or other different meat to make more delicious. The guys there is very nice and helpful, like Steve and Daniel..next time when you're around in chinatown give this place a try.
I've been eating here since I was in middle school, Chow Jew ho fun soup on the side is my forever dish. Highly recommend this spot
Great authentic Cambodian and Vietnamese food. Restaurant is overall clean, service is wonderful. Kid friendly, lots of seating, but regularly full, you have a small wait for a table. Which means it's good. Restrooms are kept clean and stocked. Handicap accessible. Street parking is limited. During Monday-Saturday metered parking.
Always my number 1 choice. Service can be rude at times. But food quality has been good, consistent since I first visited back 1984.
best noodle in oakland
Chow Jew ho fun slathered in spicy condiments is what I usually order. If you aren't in the mood for soup, any chow fun is delicious. Beware, bring cash. They do not accept debit or credit cards.
They have a loyal customer for life if their broth is never compromised .... also ask to buy their family made sauce..!
Yummy noodle soup. This is one if the oldest establishments in Oakland Chinatown. It is like a smooth machine. They get u in, give u a menu along with some hot tea or cold water. As soon as u order your food, within a couple of minutes, your food is in front of u. U eat, u pay...Next customer... Love the food here..
No frills, it's faster if you're willing to share a table for small parties. I get rare beef with thick egg noodles and beef stew broth. My girl gets the chiu jow mein ho fun (I think lol).IMHO their wavy/thick egg noodle is what I consider the standard of excellence that I judge other restaurants against. Ymmv but it's simple good food and hearty. Also I get the soda lemon to drink 😍
Classic Oakland Chinatown fare. I love it just as much now as I did 10 years ago. Chow Jew with thick egg noodle is my jam, sides of fried kidney and fish cake... Amazing stuff.Something about their bottled chili sauce just brings it all together.
Came for lunch and ordered for 5 people. Love the taste and prices are decent.
Been coming here for 25 years. Best Ho Fun in town. Try the beef satay or shrimp. The fish cakes are good too. And the lemonade is hand squeezed.
This is an Overseas Chinese restaurant. You are more likely find their foods in Southeast Asia than in Hong Kong, Taiwan, or Mainland China. Their stirred fry pork kidney is superb, so are their pan fried fish cake. All their noodle soups are excellent. I particularly like their beef sate noodle soup. And you can get superb Vietnamese coffee here too. The owner and many staff are from Vietnam.
The home of the original Noodle 21. The soup is always delicious and that’s why separates one noodle restaurant from another. Place is always crowded especially on Sunday mornings. Get there early, have some tea, and enjoy yourself. I recommend it.
2nd time at Vien Huong and another lovely experience. The three of us came for a late lunch on Saturday. Place was quite full but we easily found a table and sat down.Staff is friendly and place is casual. Bathrooms are really clean which is always nice. Cash only so come prepared ;)Between the three of us we shared:- steak bell pepper from house specials $13.5- shrimp chow mein from the noodle menu $12- riceWe weren't super hungry so this was quite enough for us three. We polished the plates! Food was really good and super light, not your typical greasy chinese I guess because it has more Vietnamese influence. We all loved the steak with bell peppers and not that impressed with the noodles. Would love to come back to try out their soups - yea we still haven't tried them boohoo!
The pho was pretty bland, but ok. Not much atmosphere, but good service. And nice that it’s open early on Sunday mornings.
They have wonderful fish cakes and great pho. I slways get the same pho because it’s the tastiest anywhere. I get the shrimp ho fun. It’s made with shrimp and seafood broth. At most other places I’ve tried it’s made with chicken broth - not the same taste at all. My friend usually gets the beef stew ho fun. Hi fun are wide rice noodles and they are delicious.
The famous noodles place in oakland, CA, must try if you are in the area
Don't let the crummy storefront scare you. The dining room is clean. The menu is full of choices for soup noodles, pan-fried noodles, fried rice and much more. Unfortunately, there are no photos in the menu. Service is quick and your food comes promptly.
We have these where you want to go to lunch conversations at work all the time. The conversation gets old because we always go to the same place. Well, not today! My friend loves this place, but unless you get there early for lunch, there's going to be a wait for a table. He said our other co-workers won't go here because it's too crowded and they don't like waiting. This place is super loud as people chatter between bites of noodle soup. This is what everyone comes here for. #21 on the menu, the many different kinds of mix meats. I love the flat egg noodles, they cook them just right, chewy without being overcooked. Also there house chili oil is fantastic, not to spicy (my heat register is pretty high so sample a small bit to decide for yourself). This is the Chinese Chouchou comfort food I grew up with, maybe this is why I rather have noodles than rice. I'll be coming back more often with winter coming soon.
Good Hong Kong style noddle. Go little early on lunchtime as that place could be really crowded.
All original noodle house, can't go wrong
Quick service. Delicious VIetnamese-Asian food. Reasonable price.
Great place for a bowl of noodles. Not to mistaken for Pho. It's #21 on the menu. The bowl comes with Ho Fun noodles (large rice noodles - you can ask for thin rice noodles or even sub for yellow egg noodles.), shrimp, pork, chicken, meatballs, fishballs, ground pork & pork kidneys. I have seen people complaining about the wooden chopsticks. Stop complaining and ask for to-go chopsticks or even a fork. We all know the ones complaining are probably folks who probably don't even know how to use chopsticks properly. All in all, please do drop by if you're in the area. Enjoy!
Although I have had their food many times before, this is the first time I have ate at the location. It is so much better than take out. It's a hole in the wall, it's cash only, and can sometimes have a line...but definitely worth it!
Cant find any noodle place that can beat vien huong so far... thats how good it is
I got flat rice noodles with shrimp in clear broth. It was ok and not that special, and for about $13 cost more than I expected for this kind of dining experience. The place was crowded enough with patrons so perhaps I ordered the wrong dish.
I ordered the seafood egg noodles, but what I got was the seafood ho fun. I was basically told I ordered this (when I didn't..) but whatever, no point in arguing so I ate it anyway.Eh, the squid tasted fishy. Broth was okay, but nothing special.
Great service food is authentic Cambodian and Vietnamese. Restaurant is clean, affordable $$. Kid friendly, handicap accessible. If you're into iced coffee they have some, it's delicious. Street parking Monday-Saturday is metered. Restaurant is usually full, at times you may have to wait a few minutes.
Good food and great prices. Cash only.
